Welcome to the first TRB Web blog post. We create and maintain websites for small businesses around Tameside in Manchester, although clients can be anywhere in the UK.
These short articles will explain how businesses can get the best out of their websites. In this first one we’ll talk about updating your website regularly and in coming months we’ll go through the almost unfathomable arts of SEO – what it means and how to play the game.
What you need to do depends on what you’re using your website for – someone selling hundreds of products a month will obviously be on their website more than someone who’s just using it as a page to say who they are, what they do and how to contact them.
Either way, when someone is looking for your product or service then you need to make sure that Google promotes you instead of your competition. So when they type in, say: “window cleaner Tameside” your website comes up high in the list that Google presents them.
Obviously you need to update your website if something’s changed, but if it hasn’t, what do you do?
Writing regular blog posts is one way – a blog is a short article. It doesn’t have to necessarily have to be about what you do, although it should be at least some of the time.
Write about new equipment you’ve just got, some of the jobs you’ve done or even a terrible journey you had coming home. Make it a bit personal so that people can get an idea of the sort of person you are.
Adding testimonials is a great one. As well as telling Google that your site is being updated, so that it gets on their list of sites to check out more regularly, you’re telling other people that you’re good at your job.
If you’re using Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram or any of the other social media platforms out there, you can make those posts pop up on your website as well. All it needs is for a little nugget of code to be put on your website – ask the company or developer who looks after your site.
Can you update your site?
All of this means having access to your website and the ability to make changes. None of the techniques here are difficult if you have a web developer who makes it easy for you.
But if you can’t change your site, Google won’t feature it as high in the list when someone looks for your service. If you want a site that you can change yourself whenever you want, instead of being charged for every update, why not talk to us?
In the coming months we’ll cover these topics in more detail and expand into others, to help you make the most of your website.
